OLBCF Responds to Passage of Senate Bill 293

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (OLBCF) is raising serious concerns following the passage of Senate Bill 293, legislation that threatens to restrict voting access for communities across the state.

Senate Bill 293 introduces measures that will make it more difficult for many Ohioans to participate in the democratic process, particularly those who rely on accessible voting options. The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus Foundation warns that the law will disproportionately impact Black voters while also creating barriers for working families, seniors, and individuals who depend on vote-by-mail options.

“Senate Bill 293 represents a significant step backward for voting access in Ohio. While this law will have a disproportionate impact on Black voters, it ultimately makes it harder for everyday Ohioans like working families, seniors, and individuals who are homebound and rely on vote by mail, to fully participate in our democracy,” said Shayla L. Davis, President of OLBCF.

The Foundation emphasizes that access to the ballot is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy and that any legislation undermining that access raises serious concerns about equity and fairness in the electoral process.

OLBCF remains committed to advocating for and protecting the fundamental rights of all voters. This law is yet another example of voter disenfranchisement, and the organization will continue working with partners, community leaders, and policymakers to ensure that every eligible Ohioan has a fair and equal opportunity to make their voice heard.
